🚨24-Hour Strike Tomorrow in Remembrance of the Tempi Tragedy
The island of Antikythera is giving out free houses and a monthly bonus of €500 for new residents!? 🤯
đź‘‹ Hey there expats,
We hope that you are all having a wonderful week so far. As always, we are bringing you top news headlines, including Friday’s 24-hour general strike in remembrance of the Tempi train tragedy, which is taking place all across the region of Greece. All train services, including the Athens Suburban Railway (Proastiakos), will be suspended throughout the day.
In Athens, the metro and tram will operate only from 9am-5pm to facilitate the movement of people attending the protest at Syntagma Square. Buses and trolleys in most parts of Athens will not be operating, though those in eastern and western Attica are expected to run as usual.
Taxis in Athens will not operate as drivers join the strike, except for protesters heading to Syntagma Square from designated pick-up points: Syngrou-Fix, Karaiskaki Square, Victoria Square and Megaron Mousikis metro stations.
Did you know? Tempi Tragedy: Expert Report Points to Possible Flammable Substance
According to GreekReporter, the expert report on the 2023 Tempi train disaster, confirms concerns that an "unknown" substance may have contributed to the massive explosion that followed the collision, killing 57 people. Greece’s National Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Organization (EODASAAM) found no evidence that the trains' technical equipment caused the fireball but suggested a possible unidentified fuel was involved.
The report highlights that interventions at the crash site compromised investigations, as debris clearance may have erased traces of materials that contributed to the explosion. It also identifies serious systemic failures, including poor railway infrastructure, lack of maintenance, and staff shortages due to Greece’s long-standing economic crisis.
The accident was worsened by human error, particularly an inexperienced station master in Larissa, who struggled with high communication demands. Additionally, a lack of coordination among emergency services at the crash site further hindered investigations.
